Description of Programs

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering offers multi-disciplinary programs of education and research in the analysis and design of mechanical, thermal and aerospace systems, products and processes. Areas of emphasis of the programs include the applications of modern computer and multi-media technologies, advanced computations, laser diagnostics, smart materials, robotics and mechatronics in design and manufacturing, dynamics and control of machines and vehicles, transportation systems, thermal and energy systems, combustion and air pollution, fluid dynamics and aerospace structures and vehicles.

Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineers use basic science in the design and manufacture of complex engineering systems. They apply physical and mechanical principles to the development of machines, energy conversion systems, materials and equipment for guidance and control.

Aerospace Science and Engineering

Aerospace engineers apply scientific knowledge to the design, manufacture and operation of bodies and vehicles influenced by aerodynamic forces.
