Microscale heat and mass transfer, phase-change heat transfer, solar thermal energy, energy efficiency in buildings, manufacturing processes.
At the WCEC, engineers and graduate students work to reduce energy use in thermal systems in buildings and other industrial processes. The Supercritical carbon dioxide Thermal Energy Enhancement Laboratory (STEEL) group uses experimental and modeling methods to design and characterize compact heat exchangers for high temperature and high pressure power cycles. The Microscale Thermal Energy Enhancement Laboratory (𝜇TEEL) group investigates novel ways to enhance boiling and condensation heat transfer in microscale dimensions. Areas of application include the design, modeling and experimental characterization of novel heating and cooling systems, thermal management of electronics and avionics, compact heat exchanger design and the modeling of energy efficiency measures in fluid and thermal systems.
